To “CHI” or Not to “CHI”

For years, we’ve been told that “CHI” flat irons are The Best!  And because they are very expensive, we believed it.  But does CHI really have the best flat irons?  In my opinion…NO!  Just because a product costs way too much money, does that make it a better product?  NO!  On the other hand, is the cheapest flat iron as good as CHI?  No.

I am a true bargain hunter but I will not pay $140+ for a flat iron no matter what.  When I decided to jump on the CHI wagon, I started shopping on eBay.  I found the “CHI Turbo 2” Flat Iron” listed for $75 so I bought it.

My thinking is double the width – cut the styling time in half.  This iron is constructed very well and is a sturdy appliance.  The product features are listed below:
§          Big “2” inch iron
§          Locks in hair color and retards fading
§          Lite weight design
§          “Flash Heating” 150-180 degrees in 6-10 seconds
It didn’t cut my styling time in half…it took longer.   Total styling time, including blow drying & straightening was 1 hour.  It was very hard to use on my hair.  My hair is very fine, so this may not be true for someone with extremely thick hair.  It was especially hard to use on my bangs.  It’s just too big and bulky and was a waste of my $75.

My next flat iron was the Conair 1” Ceramic Flat Iron that I bought at Wal-Mart for $13.99.  It was very lite weight, thinner and much, much worse than my CHI.  This iron had a temperature setting wheel but did not get very hot.  My hair constantly got snagged on this appliance making it break off.

My current flat iron is the most awesome hair styling product I have ever invested in.  It’s a “Babyliss Titanium 1” Flat Iron with Swarovski Crystals.”  The crystals are just added bling to the handle.  The product features are listed below:
§          Titanium and Ceramic plate, 1” width
§          Adjustable Heat up to 419F, Straightens hair 40% faster
§          The super smooth, extra long plates are excellent for high speed styling
§          Rounded edged plates
§          True ion generator to maximize negative ions and far infrared heat
§          Cool tips for easy handling
§          Creates a shiny, smooth finish
I purchased it on Amazon.com for $39 in September 2010.  They are higher now.  I’m assuming it was a new product and when it became so popular, they increased the price.  I WOULD pay $140 for this appliance.

The Babyliss is very smooth going through my hair and it doesn’t get snagged and break my hair off.  Total styling time, including blow drying & straightening is now 15-20 minutes.  My hair is very soft and smooth, shiny and healthy looking.  If you have fine hair like mine, you don’t want to turn the heat up too high.  I have my temperature dial set on 40.

Thumbs up for Babyliss!!

Welcome to my blog...Vanity Hair!

Well, this is my first posting to my first blog...Vanity Hair.  I have made a life changing decision late in life to change careers.  I have been in Multifamily Property Mangement for 19 years and I am ready for a change before it's too late.  I'm not getting any younger you know...

I have decided that I really want to go to Cosmetology School and become a color specialist and hair stylist.  This was the first thing I wanted to be when I was a little girl.  My mom used to go every Saturday morning to get her hair fixed in an updo with a hair piece on top.  I went with her almost every Saturday and I would watch everything the beautician's were doing.  I knew at an early age that I could "fix hair."

As a little girl, I had really long hair.  At one point, it was so long I could sit on it.  My mom would give me "pony" tails (NOT pig tails) or she would pull it back off my face.  She always said I looked like a little Indian girl and she called me her little "papoose."  My mom did not like doing hair and I hated it when she washed mine because I dreaded the comb out.  When my hair was wet, mom would section it off and start combing from the top down....just ripping through any tangles.  OUCH!  I guess that helped make me so hard headed...lol.

In third grade, I met my new BFF, Julie.  She had really long hair too, so we hit if off quickly.  In fourth grade, Julie decided she wanted to cut her hair so she would have "feathered" bangs.  OMG...I loved her hair, so I had to do the same thing!  BIG mistake!!  Little did I know, but I had 2 cowlicks...one on each corner of my forehead.  My feathered bangs looked more like Micky D's Golden Arches.

In fifth grade, I made a new BFF, Lisa.  She had short, straight blonde hair.  Well, now I wanted short hair too.  So, I talked my mom into cutting my hair into a "shag".  This shorter hair really emphasized my cowlicks!  Lisa also had the same cowlicks and she schooled me on how to control them and make them "feather."  Thanks Lisa!!  I still use the exact same technique today!

In high school, I started getting home perms in my hair so I could straighten it....LILT perms to be exact.  Do you remember those?  As I was getting my perms, I thought I can do this.  So, I started cutting my boyfriends hair and anyone else who would trust their heads to me.  One day, my current and longest standing BFF, Stephanie, asked me if I knew how to do a perm.  Well, I jumped on this!!  Remember, she asked if I knew how...not if I had ever given a perm before.  I told her I did and we started the process.  Of course I didn't tell her the truth until I had her head all rolled up and perm solution processing.  I grabbed my camera and said "Steph...I have a confession to make.  I've never given a perm before...you're my 1st."  Her mouth dropped to her chest and yes...I got it on film.  I still have that picture somewhere.  Her hair turned out perfect and I continued to give her perms even after I moved to Texas.

In college, it seems like I fixed a lot of bad hair cuts.  Girls would go somewhere in town to get their hair done and come crying into my dorm room because their hair looked so bad.  So...I would fix it.  I also colored, highlighted and cut hair in my dorm room....FREE.  I should have charged something.  There was 1 hair request that I had to decline.  A young ethnic student came to my dorm room one day and asked if I would help her with her weave.  What?  A new experience with ethnic hair....YES!  She pulled out the hair pieces, thread and a sewing needle.  I was confused.  I asked her what the thread and needle was for and she told me I would have to "sew" the hair pieces into her scalp.  Well...I declined.  If you know me, then you know I do not have a strong stomach.  That request seemed more medical then cosmetic.

I also cut and colored hair after I moved to Texas.  One of my roommates, Kim, always liked to change her hair style.  She would tell me she wanted a new do, so I'd tell her to get me a picture of what she wanted.  With my little Wal-Mart scissors...I'd look at whatever picture she would give me and within a few minutes, her hair looked just like the picture.

Over the last 10-15 years, I haven't done much hair.  I've gotten so locked down with life and my job, that I have forgotten about things that brought me joy.  I know that may sound strange to some, but I love doing hair!  Well, I want the remainder of my professional life to have joy and happiness and very little stress.

I want to be my own boss.  I am so tired of corporate politics..I am not a "politician"...no what I mean?

I have been told by several friends that I can earn money with a blog.  So, here it is.  Vanity Hair.  I am going to do my best to earn extra income through Vanity Hair so in 2 years (that's my goal) I can attend Paul Mitchell Beauty School.  Any suggestions you may have are welcomed!  If you'd like to advertise something on my blog too...that would be awesome!!

Please follow my blog.  You don't have to read my posts or respond, but following will help get my blog going.  Thanks everyone for your support!!
